The Federal Government cannot ENFORCE PRICE CONTROL on DSTV
Director General, Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission, Dr. Babatunde Irukera..
I bet alot of Nigerians didn’t know this including most of us at the Nigerian Global Affairs Council (NIGAC).
The Director General of the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Council (FCCPC) made it CLEAR that the Commission is the Secondary Agency to reach out to having exhausted all avenue to RESOLVE whatever issues NIGERIAN CONSUMERS have with a particular product or service from a large company.
This Federal Government Agency has done alot to mandate organizations to have a robust consumer complaints channel including ensuring that CONSUMERS are fully aware of the fact that a Company is meant to attend to whatever ISSUES they might have with a particular product or service..
It is also worthy to note that the D.G of this Agency had reinforced his thoughts about the fact that Nigerians need to be get used to getting QUALITY and Excellent SERVICES from large Companies and Organizations particularly when they pay for a service – he made mention of the fact that a lot of Nigerians get to disparage the COMMISSION and their work on social media for the efforts they have made to ENFORCE REGULATIONS – the D.G mentioned that their most important MANDATE is CONSUMER PROTECTION AGAINST bad service and price exploitation… The D.G stated that when Nigerians disparage their efforts, it tends to embolden these medium and large businesses to take their REGULATIONS for granted.
The D.G also highlighted the ISSUE OF DSTV and said that the reason Federal Government through the COMMISSION cannot enforce price CONTROL on the Digital Pay TV service provider is because they OPERATE in a market where their SERVICES isn’t essential and it doesn’t affect the large MAJORITY of Nigerians as only a small fraction of Nigerians (less than 5%) patronize this LUXURY SERVICE DSTV offers and he believes that DSTV offers these premium SERVICES and charges A RATE that ensures they stay in Business whilst getting a PROFIT for their SERVICES. DSTV employs Nigerians and DSTV has also bought a lot of Nigerian Content it showcases on its platform.
In all, the D.G said that the Commission encourages companies in Nigeria to have a clear cut mechanism for how customers can easily lay their complaints about a product or service should the need arise – the D.G said that it is one of the things they have done to ensure that consumers are able to access companies easily. For anyone who wants to escalate an issue to the FCCPC having exhausted all channels to resolve their complaints, they can do so by downloading the FCCPC APP on their phones.
